U-Haul Report (5/6): Statewide Coaching Changes Update

By TITUS Sports Marketing – As spring practice charges into third gear across the Lone Star State (with 7-on-7 in the bullpen quickly warming up), one of the state's larger schools -- Bryan -- has been confronted with finding a new head football coach.

In our latest review of statewide high school head football coaching changes since the end of the 2005 season, Marvin Sedberry has announced that he is leaving Bryan to become the athletic director of the Alief ISD (Hastings, Elsik and Taylor high schools) outside Houston.

Sedberry was 10-11 in two seasons at Bryan, which will lose students in the coming years when Rudder HS opens in the Bryan ISD in 2008. Sedberry's other coaching stops in 32 years included Greenville, Wilmer-Hutchins, Beaumont Central and Dallas Carter.

At Alief, Sedberry will follow Ronnie Bell, who died of leukemia on Dec. 1. A recent support fund which will assist families of Houston-area coaches who are suffering from debilitating diseases has just been established. Contributions can be made to Ronnie Bell Memorial Foundation, c/o Amegy Bank, 14965 Southwest
Freeway, Sugar Land, TX, 77478.

In other coaching news, one of the state's high school greats, Mike Barber, is out as the head football coach at Grace Preparatory in Arlington. Barber, who was a volunteer coach at the private school during his eight-year stay, had led the Lions to five TAPPS state titles.

According to reports, Barber was hopeful of hiring more coaches at Grace Prep to fuel his interest in taking the program from Div. II to Div. I (highest division in TAPPS). The additional staff would have also allowed Barber to focus more time with his full-time prison ministry (Mike Barber Ministries), which is based in nearby DeSoto.

Barber's success at quarterback at White Oak HS earned him a spot on the Pepsi All-Time Greatest Texas High School Team, as selected by Dave Campbell's Texas Football magazine readers in 1998. Barber was a standout WR at Louisiana Tech and would later become an All-Pro tight end with the Houston Oilers and Los Angeles Rams.

Grace Prep will open its 2006 season against Plano's newest private school, John Paul II High School, on Sept. 1.

More than 160 Texas high schools are set to change coaches between the 2005 and '06 seasons.
