This is kind of an off shoot of the Brookshire Royal Thread. What do you guys think is the most important characteristic that a coach must have. It sounds like that staff had a snake on it, and the more and more I hear it is true. The first thing that I learned when coming into coaching is that all coach's should be loyal to each other, and that, what happens in the field house stays in the field house. I was taught that LOYALTY is the number one trait to have as a coach. I am glad that I work for an established staff that are all loyal to each other. This kind of crap would never happen where I am at. If someone would have tried that, the guy trying to do the back stabbing would have been immediatly relieved of his coaching duties.
Loyalty, loyalty, loyalty, loyalty
Our profession is going down the drain fellas. Partly because of things we can't control, and partly because of backstabbing undercutting pricks. Lets save our profession and bring some honor back to coaching.

Loyalty does indeed mean a lot. The school must be loyal to you as well. I think the characteristic that supercedes all is work ethic.

Look at our society the last 15 years and see how crappy it is. Then look at the profession. The people coming into coaching are a product of the crappiest society in the history of the US. Fifteen years ago how many coaches could get hired with tatoos that showed? or piercings?

I think the ability to breathe would be an important characteristic of a coach. If you can't breathe, you'll be dead and thus not be able to coach.

I think another important quality is to not be a little bitch. Speak your mind, not what you think the HC wants to hear.

that is true. You should speak your mind, but if you don't like the way the HC is doing things you shouldn't try to stabb him in the back you should just move on if you don't like it. Loyalty is dying and it is going to kill our profession

I'm pretty new in the profession, but I would never have thought a coach would do that. My first year I was told to always be loyal to the coaching staff, if we had differences we would talk about it in the field house, but we would always defend each other against the school, administration, community. Loyalty is a big, but I think that you need to also include a passion for the sport and to be selfless. The guys who get out after only a few years are the ones who realize that they do not have these qualities. Unfortunately we have a lot of coaches who do not have these qualities and are close to retirement.

things are so much different when i got into this profession. the guy i worked for at the time i felt was a complete a$$hole. Now i appreciate everything he made me learn. I have worked for people that have had backstabbers on the staff I feel if you work for him work for him. If you dont like him thank him for the opportunity and leave. Dont become backstabbers. WIth so much technology young coaches have it made. I remember splicing 8mm film as a rookie coach, taking the wire for the headsets to the visitors pressbox, coach making sure i placed all the hangers the same direction after laundry duty. It just isnt the same.

Try not to be a yes man, when my head coach had idea I threw mine at him. He respected me for that. He would alwyas consider what I thought. Sometimes i was right and sometimes he was right, but in the end the kids benefited the most.

I don't know. I find it hard to be loyal to guys that I don't have respect for. You have to earn respect. Therefore, you must earn loyalty.

If you don't have respect for your boss you shouldn't be working for him. And on the same token if you don't respect him that doesn't mean that you have to stabb him and the rest of the staff in the back.
